For Autotrader dealers
What size photos does Autotrader actually need?
Autotrader is a new and used vehicle marketplace built for franchise and independent dealers listing through a dealer account. Its own published photo rules are surprisingly small — a low pixel cap and a tight file-size limit, both quoted in the table below — and photos are added individually or through a batch upload tool that also accepts ZIP files. You'll see other sites online quote a specific photo-count minimum plus a higher ‘premium’ number, and much larger pixel dimensions, as ‘Autotrader policy.’ Autotrader's own dealer help pages don't publish those numbers, so they aren't here. The table below shows only what Autotrader itself documents.

Format enforcement
Renaming a file's extension is not enough — it must actually be that file type

Autotrader’s own stat — 2011
Autotrader's own 2011 press release found that listings with only stock photos didn't perform much better than listings with no photo at all, while listings with actual photos and prices saw roughly 140% more vehicle detail page views and 110% more shopper interaction.
“listings with only stock photos didn't perform much better than listings with no photo at all”
This finding comes from a 2011 press release, the oldest performance stat on these pages, so current results may differ.

How VehiclePhoto helps here
Autotrader keeps its own published size small. VehiclePhoto doesn't make an Autotrader-sized export yet — until it does, our free resize tool crops and scales a finished photo to Autotrader's published dimensions right in your browser. It doesn't compress to the file-size limit, so check each file against the table above before you upload.
FAQ
Autotrader, answered.
How many photos does Autotrader actually require?
Autotrader's own dealer help pages don't publish a minimum or maximum photo count. What they do publish is a size limit: keep each photo at 640×480 pixels or smaller and under 100 KB. Counts and pixel dimensions you may see elsewhere, presented as ‘Autotrader policy,’ don't appear on those help pages.
Why is Autotrader's photo size so much smaller than everywhere else?
We don't know for certain — Autotrader hasn't published a reason — but 640×480 and under 100 KB reads like a spec written for an older, slower upload pipeline. It's the smallest published limit of any marketplace we cover; see the full comparison on our photo requirements hub.
Can I upload a batch of photos at once?
Yes — Autotrader's batch upload tool accepts GIF, JPG or ZIP files, in addition to adding photos one at a time.
Does Autotrader ban watermarks or dealer branding on photos?
Autotrader doesn't publish a watermark or overlay policy on its dealer help pages, so we can't tell you whether it's banned or allowed.
